Direct Sales

Alberta direct cattle sales last week saw light trade develop with weighted average steer and heifer price closing the week around $294.50/cwt FOB feedlot, $4.50/cwt lower than the previous week. From their highs in September fed prices have declined $22.00/cwt. Last week US packer interest was noted, and light volumes of Western Canadian fed were marketed South. Last week butcher cows traded $2.00-3.00/cwt lower through commercial auction facilities. Even though cow prices were lower feeder cow and speculative buying interest has been supportive. The market is currently in the process of working through peak numbers. The market should bottom over the next 30 days.

US Trade

In the U.S, trade was scattered over the course of the week. Dressed sales in Iowa and Nebraska were from $355.00-365.00/cwt (mostly $360.00/cwt), fully steady with the previous week. Live sales in North were from $229.00-230.00/cwt, steady to $1.00/cwt softer. Sales in Texas and Kansas were at $232.00/cwt, $4.00/cwt softer. With lower cattle prices over the past few weeks processing margins have improved, yet packers have been slow to increase slaughter rates. Last week’s cattle slaughter was estimated at 555,000 head. Over the past four weeks, on average slaughter volumes have bene running about 50,000 head below last year.
