Alberta direct cattle sales Tuesday saw no new trade to report but there is a good chance scattered trade will develop by this afternoon. Western Canadian fed slaughter for the week ending April 5th totaled just over 33,000 head, for the beginning of April this is the smallest slaughter volume since 2017. From a supply standpoint, yearling numbers are declining while fed calves are still a little bit away from hitting the market. Over the past couple of days, the largest price jump has been on the cow market. Top end cows are trading in the low $230’s/cwt. Stronger cow prices should lend some support to the fed market.

In the US, very light trade was reported in Nebraska at $208.00/cwt (live), fully steady with the previous week. This does not mot set a price trend. Other than a couple hundred head of cattle trading in Nebraska business has been quiet in all other feeding regions. Buying interest should improve today and tomorrow as buyers and sellers looked to get things wrapped up before the Easter holiday. Live cattle contracts are rallying possibly pricing in higher cash prices for this week. Today it is interesting to point out the August live cattle contract is trading at a premium to December. This is quite rare as the summer contracts are usually at a discount to December.
