Alberta direct cattle sales on Monday saw no new trade to report, this week’s showlist has been compiled with volumes smaller than the previous week. Based on the three-year average Alberta fed basis levels historically weaken from May to June. With seasonally tighter cattle supplies Western Canadian packers continue to run reduced hours. Despite record high fed prices this does not mean record high profits for the feedlot industry. A lot of the early placed calves being marketed right now are on either side of breakeven levels.

In the US, there is no new trade to report. Today live bids of $255.00/cwt have been reported in the Southern feeding states. Bids are $1.00-2.00/cwt lower than the previous week. Significant trade will likely be delayed until the second half of this week. Asking prices are poorly defined but are expected to start out around $260.00/cwt on a live basis. Showlist volumes have been reported smaller in Nebraska and Colorado. Beef cutout values have struggled to gain traction but the same can be said for the pork market. Pork cutout values usually trend higher driven by belly and ham primal values. This has not materialized and pork cutout values are trading below last year and below the five-year average.
