Slaughter Report
Alberta direct cattle last week saw light trade develop with weighted average steer and heifer prices closing the week around 352.50/cwt, $3.50/cwt higher than the previous week. This is the sixth consecutive year that fed prices have established first half of the year highs in June. Last week butcher cows traded steady to $1.00/cwt lower through commercial auction facilities. There have been a few more grain fed cows on the market as of late. Despite the uptick in cow supplies, prices continue to hold up very well.

In the US, most of the trade took place on Friday. Dressed sales in Iowa and Nebraska ranged from $405.00-410.00/cwt (mostly $408.00/cwt) $3.00/cwt higher thane the previous week. Live sales in all major feeding states started out at $258.00/cwt however, by Friday afternoon cattle were trading at $260.00/cwt. Live sales were $3.00-5.00/cwt stronger. USDA released its June 1st cattle on feed report last week and it was viewed as slightly bullish as feedlot placements came in below pre-report estimates. For the month of May placements were 10% lower than last year. the largest year over year decline in placements were in Nebraska followed by Texas. Cattle on feed inventories have made a counter seasonal move higher. Cattle on feed inventories were reported at 11.7 million head, 2% larger than last year.
