In a bid to alleviate the administrative burdens faced by Alberta’s farmers, the Governments of Canada and Alberta have announced significant changes to Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC)’s AgriStability program. These changes are set to reduce paperwork and lower costs for producers.
Starting in 2025, a new option will allow farmers to align their AgriStability reporting with their tax filing. This change is expected to reduce paperwork and accounting fees, making it easier for producers to enroll and participate in the program. Additionally, an accelerated deadline for submitting forms to AFSC will ensure earlier payments to farmers. Enrolling in AgriStability will also provide producers with access to to other credit options, such as the federal Advance Payments Program, which offers low-cost cash advances.
Minister of Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, RJ Sigurdson, emphasizes the program’s responsiveness to farmers’ needs.
“We value the dedication and adaptability of our province’s farmers. These changes to the AgriStability program will better respond to each producer’s unique situation, making the program more predictable, timely and simpler to access, which is what producers have been asking for,” Minister Sigurdson explains.
