Provincial government allocates $8.5 million to support rural utilities

Rural and remote residents face unique challenges in accessing affordable utilities and heating. To address these issues, the Alberta government has announced an investment in Budget 2025.

The budget allocates $8.5 million to the Rural Utilities Program, which includes the Rural Electric Program, Rural Gas Program, Rural Water Program, and the Remote Area Heating Allowance. This funding aims to ensure rural communities have access to essential services like gas, power, and water, while providing financial relief to thousands of rural Albertans dealing with high utility bills.

Nathan Neudorf, Minister of Affordability and Utilities, says “farmers, ranchers, and rural communities are crucial to Alberta. These grants ensure they can access the utilities they need at a reasonable cost.”

The Rural Electric Program receives $700,000, recognizing the importance of electricity in modern farming and ranching. Administered by the Alberta Federation of Electrification Associations, these grants support the construction of electrical services for farms and ranches.

Budget 2025 also commits $5.7 million to the Natural Gas Program, administered by the Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops, to expand and update natural gas infrastructure. This funding will provide more rural Albertans with reliable and affordable home heating options, attract new businesses, create jobs, and diversify the local economy.

For those unable to access the natural gas system, Budget 2025 allocates $1.6 million to the Remote Area Heating Allowance program, providing financial relief to over 2,000 households, primarily for Indigenous communities, to help with the high cost of alternative heating fuels such as heating oil and propane.

Access to safe, abundant water for residential, livestock, and irrigation needs is also addressed. Budget 2025 commits $500,000 to the Rural Water Program, ensuring rural water co-ops across the province have access to modern water treatment and distribution systems.
