AFIN to close, ARECA takes over representation

The Alberta Forage Industry Network (AFIN) has announced that it will be closing its operations on June 30, 2025. The responsibilities for representing Alberta’s forage industry will be transferred to the Agricultural Research & Extension Council of Alberta (ARECA).

Founded in 2010, AFIN has facilitated collaboration among forage producers, processors, agricultural businesses, and various stakeholders. This collaboration has aimed to amplify their collective voice, driving positive changes to improve the profitability and sustainability of their businesses through the use of forages. ARECA will continue this collaborative approach.

For the past 15 years, AFIN has advocated for Alberta’s forage producers, promoting the sustainability and growth of the province’s forage industry. After thorough consideration and consultation with industry stakeholders, the decision was made to transition representation to ARECA. ARECA, a producer-led organization, works closely with numerous Forage and Applied Research Associations, Commissions, the Canadian Forage and Grassland Association (CFGA), researchers, agricultural businesses, and governments. They advocate on forage issues and opportunities, support applied research, on-farm projects, and various extension activities for forage and livestock producers.

“ARECA’s expertise in supporting rural producers, combined with its commitment to sustainability, makes it an ideal fit for continuing the important work of Alberta’s forage industry,” says Edward Shaw, Chairperson of AFIN. “While this marks the end of an era for AFIN, we are confident that the forage sector will be in capable hands with ARECA moving forward.

AFIN’s members will be integrated into ARECA’s initiatives, benefiting from the expanded resources and advocacy efforts the organization provides to Alberta’s agricultural sector.

Key points of transition:

  • AFIN Closure: Effective June 30, 2025, AFIN will cease operations.
  • Transfer of representation: ARECA will now handle forage industry representation, services, and advocacy efforts.
  • Member integration: Current AFIN members will transition into ARECA’s programs, ensuring continued support and services.

ARECA will continue to support Alberta’s forage producers, focusing on sustainable practices and resource management at both provincial and national levels. For more information about ARECA’s services and how to get involved, click here.
