Australia reopens market to Canadian beef after two-decade ban

Canadian beef producers are celebrating a major trade breakthrough as Australia lifts its long-standing ban on fresh and frozen beef imports from Canada. This marks the first time since 2003 that Canadian beef will be available in the Australian market.

Australia was one of the last countries to maintain restrictions related to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). With the completion of Australia’s risk assessment, Canadian beef can now re-enter this important Indo-Pacific market.

Doug Roxburgh, Chair of Alberta Beef Producers (ABP), says that ABP is excited to see the opening of the Australian market to Canadian beef.

“ABP is a strong advocate for free and fair trade, both at home and abroad,” explains Roxburgh. “Expanding access to international markets like Australia strengthens our industry, supports producer profitability, and reinforces the quality and reputation of Canadian beef around the world.”

Tyler Fulton, President of the CCA, emphasized the high standards of Canadian beef, stating that producers are proud to deliver some of the safest and highest-quality beef globally.

“As the demand for Canadian beef around the world continues to grow, we look forward to every new market opportunity,” says Fulton.
