Veterinary Learning Commons opens at UCVM

The University of Calgary has officially opened its Veterinary Learning Commons at the Spy Hill campus, a $68.5-million provincial investment designed to tackle Alberta’s shortage of livestock and rural veterinarians.

The new 70,000-sq.-ft. facility allows the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) to double annual Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) enrolment from 50 to 100 students. It features modern classrooms, labs, collaborative spaces, and wellness areas, while centralizing administrative and clinical functions to enhance operational efficiency.

“This investment into the expansion of our veterinary education facilities is already making an impact, helping the University of Calgary meet the growing demand for more veterinary professionals,” says University of Calgary President and Vice-Chancellor Ed McCauley.

Doubles DVM training capacity

“With the building complete and open to students, we’re proud to be training twice as many new veterinarians each year — professionals who will ensure the welfare of domestic animals, along with Alberta’s animal production industry and public health.”

Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation R.J. Sigurdson, who attended the opening, highlighted the initiative’s impact on Alberta’s agriculture and livestock sectors:

“This new facility doubles training capacity for veterinarians and supports Alberta’s agriculture and livestock sectors, especially in rural communities. This is a big step forward for animal health, food safety, and the future of veterinary care across Alberta.”

Livestock sector support and collaboration

With the Veterinary Learning Commons now open, UCVM is poised to train more veterinarians who will serve rural communities and support Alberta’s livestock industry for years to come. In addition to capital support from the province, philanthropic contributions such as the gift of W.A. Ranches by Jack Anderson and Wynne Chisholm provide students with unique and valuable learning opportunities.
