Alberta commits $1 million to Genome Alberta work placements

Alberta’s government is investing an additional $1 million in Genome Alberta’s work placement program, providing support for recent graduates entering fields such as bioinformatics, big data and business development.

The funding, which will run from 2026 to 2029, is expected to support approximately 20 one-year placements with 18 to 20 Alberta small-and medium-sized businesses.

While the program serves Alberta’s broader biotechnology sector, the province notes genomic tools and technologies have applications in agriculture, food production, health, and environmental management.

For agriculture, genomics is used in areas ranging from livestock genetics and herd health research to crop breeding and agricultural technology development. As more research and innovation projects rely on data analysis and genetic information, demand for specialized skills has increased across several sectors, including agriculture and agri-food.

The work placements are intended to provide graduates with industry experience while helping employers fill roles related to bioinformatics, data analysis, marketing, partnership development and commercialization.

The funding builds on a previous $1-million investment that supported 23 placements with 17 Alberta businesses. Those placements included 15 bioinformatics and big data positions and eight business development positions.

According to the province, more than 70 per cent of participants remained employed after completing their placements.

Genome Alberta President and CEO David Bailey said the program helps connect emerging professionals with Alberta employers while supporting workforce development within the province’s biotechnology sector.

As genomic technologies continue to be used across a range of industries, including agriculture and food production, the program is expected to provide graduates with practical experience while helping businesses access workers with specialized skills.
