New scholarship announced by the Canadian Beef Check-Off Agency

It is no surprise that Canada’s beef industry continues to focus on the engagement of young entrants into the beef industry, whether that be grassroots producers, future leaders of our national and provincial organizations, or industry partners along the value chain.

The Canadian Beef Check-Off Agency continues to diversify its youth strategy with the addition of a new annual scholarship, aimed at students who intend to make an impact in Canada’s beef industry.

The scholarship is open not only to beef producers and those directly involved with their families, but it is open to students who can see unique ways to make an impact through marketing, research, public engagement, and other areas where check-off dollars are invested to generate value for the beef industry in Canada.

“Our scholarship program is a celebration of the many years of check-off investment into our industry, while ensuring that we have a healthy future,” said Jeff Smith, Agency Chair.  “The Agency is very committed to supporting and engaging young industry representatives in new ways.”

Julie Mortenson, the Agency’s Youth Member and member of the scholarship committee, sees value in the extensive range of career paths that can help shape Canada’s beef industry.

“We have to acknowledge that our industry as a whole needs to stay relevant, and that includes the future movers and shakers in all sectors of our industry”, said Mortenson. “That means everyone from producers, marketers and communicators, researchers and large animal veterinarians, and even those who see an opportunity to make a difference in food, human health, and nutrition.”

While preference may be given to applicants who are beef producers or have a background in agriculture, it is not a requirement for the scholarship.

Applicants are asked to submit a 1-2 minute video, showcasing their desire to improve and grow Canada’s beef industry in a unique way. The investment of the beef check-off in Canada delivers value to the beef industry, and the scholarship seeks to support those who want to make an impact in the same way.

Mortenson expressed her enthusiasm about the program. “I’m so excited to be a part of this new initiative from the Agency, and I would like to encourage anyone enrolled in post-secondary to give this opportunity strong consideration,” she said.

The deadline for scholarship applications is June 30, 2023 and the selected applicant will be announced at the Agency’s AGM in August 15, held in collaboration with the Canadian Beef Industry Conference in Calgary at Stampede Park.

About the Author

The Canadian Beef Check-Off Agency administers the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off; a mandatory levy collected on cattle sales throughout Canada to fund research and marketing activities on behalf of the entire industry. It is collected from cattle producers when they market their cattle by provincial organizations, using their existing collection systems involving auction markets, order buyers, brand inspectors and others who handle cattle sales. The Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off provides industry funding for the Beef Cattle Research Council responsible for the industry’s national research program, Canada Beef for market development and promotion, and for public and stakeholder engagement, administered by the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) in partnership with Canada Beef and under the oversight of the Canadian Beef Advisors.
