Researchers at the University of Calgary are looking at potential ways to manage the health of wood bison, with a focus on tuberculosis and brucellosis, and they need your help.
Drs. David C. Hall and Kyle Plotsky, independent researchers employed by the University of Calgary, are working on a Parks Canada funded project to understand peoples’ attitudes about wood bison, the disease problem, and potential management strategies.
Alberta beef producers are asked to please complete a short (15-20 minute) survey to share their thoughts. The responses will be anonymously incorporated into a final report on the potential value of strategies for managing wood bison health in Wood Buffalo National Park. The report will also include the results of questionnaires and workshops with Indigenous communities around the park, bison producers, hunters, the general public, and other stakeholder groups.
Results will be provided to Parks Canada and all other interested parties for use in the development of bison management policy.
You can find more information about the wood bison health issue and our project at ucvm-bison-project.com. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Dr. Plotsky (kyle.plotsky@ucalgary.ca) or Dr. Hall (dchall@ucalgary.ca).
