Alberta harvest nearing the finish line

Harvest is winding down across Alberta, with producers making good progress despite a growing season that delivered its share of weather-related hurdles.

According to Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, major crops are now about 88 per cent harvested across the province. While periods of rain, slow crop development, and, more recently, frost and snow delayed harvest in some areas, favourable conditions over the past several weeks have helped farmers make significant headway.

Alberta Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Tara Sawyer, acknowledged the efforts of Alberta producers as another harvest season draws to a close.

“For many farm families, harvest is the culmination of months of hard work and many long days,” said Sawyer. “Whether they’re wrapping up harvest or working to bring in the last of this year’s crop, farmers and producers across Alberta continue to show the dedication and determination that keeps our agriculture sector strong.”

Conditions heading into winter are also encouraging for both crop and livestock producers.

Surface and sub-surface soil moisture levels remain above historical averages across much of the province, helping create favourable conditions for next year’s crop. Fall-seeded crops are also reported to be off to a strong start heading into winter dormancy.

For beef producers, pasture conditions continue to be better than seasonal norms. Provincial pasture ratings of good to excellent remain above both five- and 10-year averages, which has helped support grazing conditions through the fall.

Sawyer pointed to those conditions as producers begin looking toward 2027.

“As producers prepare for winter and begin looking ahead to the 2027 growing season, there are positive signs across much of Alberta,” said Sawyer.
