The Alberta government has announced the appointment of three new members to the Agricultural Products Marketing Council, along with the reappointment of three current members. Additionally, new chair and vice-chair positions have been designated.
The council, a public agency, oversees agricultural marketing boards and commissions, ensuring they follow best governance practices. It also provides policy advice to the Minister of Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation and administers relevant legislation.
RJ Sigurdson, Minister of Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, emphasized the council’s importance.
“This board includes members with outstanding agricultural credentials and experience,” explained Sigurdson. “It advises the government to keep our agricultural industry competitive and innovative, attractive investment, creating jobs, and ensuring food security for Alberta families and beyond.”
Returning for a second term are John Buckley, who will serve as the new chair, and Henricus Bos, the new vice-chair. Both will assume their roles on March 21, 2025. John Guelly is also reappointed for a second term, while Susan Novak continues as the government’s representative.
John Buckely expressed his honour at being appointed chair, highlighting his past three years on the council and his work on amalgamating the former wheat and barley commissions. He looks forward to collaborating with council members, boards, commissions, and Minister Sigurdson to strengthen Alberta’s agricultural sector.
Three outgoing members will be replaced by new appointees — Ian Chitwood, Susan Schafers, and David Moss — who will bring fresh perspectives to the council starting March 21, 2025.
Council members are selected through an open and competitive process based on their experience and credentials. The council currently has seven members, including a Government of Alberta representative.
