World Mental Health Day: Minister Williams highlights support and initiatives

In recognition of World Mental Health Day, Minister of Mental Health and Addiction, Dan Williams, issued a statement emphasizing the importance of mental health support and the ongoing efforts to assist Albertans facing mental health challenges.

“On World Mental Health Day, we recognize those struggling with their mental health and send a message of support. You are not alone, and help is available. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting Albertans facing mental health challenges in their pursuit of recover,” said Minister Williams.

The Minister highlighted several key initiatives aimed at expanding mental health services, particularly for youth. Significant funding has been allocated to CASA Mental Health, the Integrated School Support Program, and Kids Help Phone. Additionally, the province is enhancing youth mental health hubs, increasing access to eating disorder treatment, and providing affordable counseling services to Albertans of all ages.

“The Alberta Recovery Model is built on the fact that recovery and wellness are possible. With comprehensive services including prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery, Albertans can access mental health care that helps rebuild lives and strengthens communities,” Williams added.

Minister Williams also encouraged Albertans to focus on strengthening their mental health by building healthy habits and relationships. He suggested spending quality time with family and friends, reducing screentime, and increasing time spent outdoors or learning new skills.

Expressing gratitude to front-line mental health professionals, Williams acknowledged their dedication and hard work. He noted that the recent establishment of Recovery Alberta marks a new era for mental health and addiction services, with staff committed to helping people overcome their challenges.

“If you need support, reach out. By calling 211, you can connect with local programs in your community. With the right care and support, recovery is possible,” Williams concluded.

For more information, Albertans can refer to resources such as Counselling Alberta, 211 Alberta, and Kids Help Phone. The province is also introducing new mental health classrooms as part of the ongoing efforts to support mental health in schools.
