Agriculture and the agri-food industry are the lifeblood of Southern Alberta’s economy, driving everything from extensive cattle ranching, to feedlot operations, to intensive irrigation of crows and value-added processing of diverse food products. Recognizing the critical role of agriculture, the Rotary Ag Scholarship Program aims to inspire and support Southern Alberta’s brightest post-secondary students to pursue careers in this vital sector.
In 2018, the Rotary Club of Lethbridge East launched a significant initiative to promote agriculture in Southern Alberta: a $10,000 scholarship for a deserving undergraduate student committed to a career in agriculture. This initiative was made possible through the dedication of the Club and local industry partners. The first scholarship was awarded to Lauren Machacek in February 2019 during a successful Ag Scholarship Banquet held in conjunction with Ag Expo.
Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, the Rotary Club continued its commitment to supporting agricultural education. In 2020 and 2021, two $10,000 scholarships were awarded each year, and in 2022, 2023, and 2024, three scholarships were awarded annually. This level of support, totaling $140,000 over six years, underscores the community’s dedication to investing in the education and professional development of local students pursuing agricultural careers.
