Strengthening Public Trust: ILWG seeking producer volunteers for ‘Stock Talks’

The Intensive Livestock Working Group (ILWG) is seeking producers from across Alberta to take part in “Stock Talks” — a grassroots initiative to strengthen relationships between local municipalities and the livestock sector.

As part of ILWG’s Public Trust Project, Stock Talks aims to introduce local food producers to municipal officials and foster open, constructive dialogue about opportunities, benefits and shared concerns.

ILWG is currently looking for produces who would be willing to host a tour of their operation with invited municipal guests over the next twelve months, and/or appear alongside ILWG representatives at a municipal meeting — for example Agricultural Services Board meetings, council meetings or special events.

These in-person conversations help put a face to the livestock sector — creating space for meaningful dialogue, reducing potential conflict, and building long-term mutual understanding. It has been shown that communication and connection are key to resolving tensions and creating shared success.

Counties that have already agreed to participate include:

  • Lamont County
  • Wheatland County
  • Leduc County
  • Ponoka County
  • Westlock County
  • Strathcona County
  • Newell County

ILWG is interested in hearing from producers in all regions to build a broader list of potential participants. However they are especially looking for volunteers from these counties, which are already planning Stock Talks, with many expected to happen in August.

Interested in participating?

Visit ILWG’s project page to learn more and complete the producer interest form.

ILWG will support all participating producers by helping coordinate municipal outreach, sharing relevant background materials and providing logistical assistance throughout the process.

As a producer, your role is simply to help the municipal representatives get a window on Alberta’s livestock industry — to speak authentically about your operation, share your experiences and help build mutual understanding between industry and government.

ILWG is a collaboration of eight livestock organizations, including Alberta Beef Producers, Alberta Cattle Feeder’s Association, Alberta Milk, Alberta Pork, Egg Farmers of Alberta, Alberta Chicken, Alberta Turkey, and Alberta Hatching Egg Producers.
