Checking In: What ABP is hearing at Producer Meetings

ABP Vice Chair Kent Holowath (left) leads the ABP Producer Meeting at Fort Macleod

From policy concerns to day-to-day operational realities, producers are using these meetings to share what matters most. ABP Vice Chair Kent Holowath reflects on what ABP is hearing from producers so far.

Q: Producer meetings are underway across the province. What are you hearing from producers so far?

One of the biggest things we’re hearing is that producers really value the chance to be in the room and have open, honest conversations.

The questions have been good, the discussion overall has been thorough and people are very engaged.

Q: What are producers focused on?

Producers are focused on keeping their operations viable in an environment where costs, administration, and complexity continue to grow.

There’s a strong desire to make sure policies and programs actually work on the ground, not just on paper.

And there’s a clear expectation that producer experience and practical realities need to be part of how decisions are made.

Q: What specific issues are getting the most discussion?

Obviously, traceability is a big topic this year. On that topic and others, the discussion comes back to workload and practicality. Producers want to make sure any new requirements are needed and will deliver real value.

We’re also hearing concerns around managing risk on the ranch – whether that’s administrative risk, market risk, or challenges like wildlife pressure. These conversations vary by region, but they reflect day-to-day realities producers are dealing with.

Q: What would you say to producers who are considering attending an upcoming meeting?

I’d encourage them to come out. Even if you’re unsure about an issue or just want to hear what others are saying, there’s value in being part of the conversation. The Southeast Zone meetings run the week of February 9 and after that the Northeast Zone meetings will come the week of February 17.
