Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) is encouraging livestock producers in seven Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) in Alberta’s Peace Region and Porcupine Hills area to take part in a short, producer-led elk population survey running from March 31 to April 2, 2026.
The Landowner Elk Survey is designed to gather on-the-ground observations from producers experiencing interactions with elk.
“The purpose of this survey is to help us to determine if landowner-led elk surveys can produce accurate population estimates for elk,” says Samuel Vriend, Wildlife Policy Advisor with ABP. “If this survey method proves to be successful, we’ll aim to run surveys in more areas of the province.”
Producers operating in WMUs 304, 305, 306, 308, 359, 522, and 526 are encouraged to share their observations. Completing the survey electronically helps improve efficiency, though paper copies are also available upon request.
“Ultimately, we’re evaluating if this survey method can be a tool to allow producers to have more input into elk management across the province.”

The survey includes background information and simple instructions for recording elk numbers.
ABP thanks producers in advance for taking the time to share their observations and contribute to a stronger understanding of elk population assessments in Alberta.
