Beef Cattle Code of Practice Update: What Producers Need to Know and How to Participate | Virtual

The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) is hosting a producer webinar on the Beef Cattle Code of Practice on Monday, April 13 to help producers prepare for the public comment period.

In this webinar, CCA will offer guidance and support to producers on how to participate in the 60-day Public Comment Period opening on April 13. The webinar will cover the history of the Code, the review process, a broad overview of the draft Code content, and how producers can provide feedback and input.

Measuring Methane Emissions from Feedlots Using UAVs | Virtual

Methane emissions are an increasing focus for the livestock industry, but measuring them accurately under real feedlot conditions remains a challenge. This talk will highlight how uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs, or drones) are being used to measure methane emissions directly from feedlots. Alberta AgriSystems Living Lab will walk through how the technology works, what it can reveal about emission patterns, and how these measurements compare to traditional approaches. The presentation will focus on practical insights, current limitations, and what this type of data could mean for producers as the industry moves toward improved efficiency, transparency, and sustainability.

Composting 101 | Virtual

Join Alberta AgriSystems Living Lab and Dr. Shanwei Xu from Agriculture and Agri-food Canada to learn more about composting. Gather knowledge on past and current composting research including:

  • the concept of composting,
  • optimal conditions for composting procedures,
  • application of composting for the disposal of livestock manure and carcasses,
  • examining the compost/manure fertilizer values as soil amendment for crop production and increase soil health, and
  • co-benefits of using composting for manure disposal including inactivating pathogens such as infectious prions and reducing the antimicrobial residues and spread of antimicrobial resistance genes into environment.

Last Call: Beef Cattle Code of Practice Public Comment Period | Virtual

Canada’s Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Beef Cattle is currently undergoing an update, with a public comment period beginning April 13, 2026.

The Code sets out basic standards for animal care practices for producers. It was originally released in 2013 and reviewed in 2018. An update process began in 2023 through the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC), which oversees Code development in collaboration with industry and other stakeholders.

During the 60-day public comment period, producers and other stakeholders will have the opportunity to review the draft Code and provide feedback before it is finalized.

Code update timeline:

  • Start: December 2023
  • Public comment period: April 13th, 2026 – June 12th, 2026
  • Projected completion: second quarter of 2027
