FerAppease: 4 Things to Know

As stress management becomes a bigger focus in beef production, new tools like FerAppease® are getting attention. The product—developed by Fera Diagnostics & Biologicals—claims to mimic calming pheromones that help cattle handle stressful events like weaning or transport. But does the data support the claims? Here are four things to know:

1. It’s based on natural “appeasing” signals

FerAppease mimics pheromones secreted by cows that calm their calves. Applied topically (5 mL behind the poll and 5 mL above the muzzle), it’s intended to reduce cortisol levels and limit the stress cascade that affects health and performance.

(Adapted from the ABP Magazine article by Jessica Sperber, Ph.D., M.S. & Carsten Loseke, B.S. , — Read the full article “FerAppease for Cattle: Hype or Hard Data?” here.)

2. Research results are mixed

Some studies show lower stress markers and calmer handling after FerAppease use, while others show little to no measurable difference. Outcomes appear to vary based on cattle type, environment, and management systems.

3. Context matters

Producers should compare published research to their own conditions—cow-calf, backgrounding, or feedlot—before expecting similar results. What works in one setup may not translate directly to another.

4. Try it like a trial

If you’re curious, treat it as an experiment. Start small, use control groups, and track performance, feed intake, and handling behaviour to see if it makes a difference on your operation.
