Alberta extends AgriStability enrolment amid wet conditions

Alberta farmers dealing with excessive moisture this growing season will have more time to access support through the AgriStability program.

The Alberta and federal governments have announced changes for the 2026 program year, including an extension of the enrolment deadline from April 30 to October 1, 2026. The move is intended to help producers assess the impact of weather-related challenges and determine whether the program can help offset losses.

The 2026 interim payment rate has also increased from 50 per cent to 75 per cent of an estimated final payment, providing eligible producers with quicker access to funds and improved cash flow.

Announcing the changes, Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Tara Sawyer said the extreme wet conditions highlight how “one growing season can look very different from the next,” making it difficult for farmers to predict the risks their operations may face.

In Alberta, AgriStability is administered by Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC). Producers who enroll during the extended signup period may still qualify for support, though benefits will be reduced by 20 per cent. The required enrollment fee must be paid by October 1, 2026.
