Celebrating World Pulses Day

February 10th marks World Pulses Day, a global event designed by the United Nations to highlight the importance of pulses like chickpeas, dry beans, lentils, dry peas, and lupins. Since its proclamation in 2019, this day has recognized the vital role pulses play in achieving the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Pulse crops are considered environmentally friendly because they need minimal fertilizer, resulting in a lower carbon footprint compared to other foods. They also have a low water footprint, thriving in semi-arid conditions and tolerating drought stress. Beyond sustainability, pulses are affordable, easy to store, and packed with nutrients. This ability to improve soil microbiomes has significantly enhanced farming practices, especially in low-income rural areas.

World Pulses Day aims to raise awareness about these benefits and promote sustainable food production to enhance food security and nutrition. Let’s celebrate the power of pulses and their contribution to a sustainable future!
