More rain means feedlot operators should check catch basin capacity

Recent rainfall across Alberta has increased runoff at feedlots, prompting the Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) to remind operators to check that their catch basins have sufficient capacity.

According to the NRCB, this is especially important for feedlots that have installed roller compacted concrete pen floors without increasing catch basin capacity. Additional runoff from recent rainfall can place added pressure on existing systems.

If operators believe their catch basins may need to be expanded, the NRCB advises contacting the organization before beginning any work. Catch basin expansions require NRCB approval and a permit before construction can begin.
