Olds College of Agriculture & Technology is taking a reset year for AgSmart in 2026.
The learning exposition is expected to return in 2027 with a renewed focus on applied research, technology and national collaboration across the agriculture sector.
AgSmart has traditionally been a three-day event featuring expert speakers, live technology demonstrations, education sessions and an interactive trade show. Past events have drawn hundreds of producers, agri-business professionals, educators and innovators from across Canada.
In recent years, organizers began shifting the format to be more conference-oriented, while maintaining popular outdoor demonstrations. In 2025, AgSmart featured more indoor sessions on campus alongside field demonstrations, a change that received positive feedback from attendees.
However, officials say further refinement is needed to better align the event with its goals and ensure long-term sustainability.
“AgSmart is where collaboration turns into action,” says Shelly Flint, director of Agri-Trade.
“With Olds College, we’re building a stronger national platform that brings farmers, industry and applied research together around practical technology and data-driven solutions that can be used in the field.”
One challenge has been balancing the educational focus of AgSmart with expectations from vendors and exhibitors. While presentations and learning sessions consistently receive strong feedback, some exhibitors reported lower traffic compared to more traditional farm shows.
As part of the redevelopment, organizers are exploring positioning AgSmart as a learning exposition that showcases applied research and practical, data-driven solutions for agriculture. There is also interest in expanding collaboration with post-secondary institutions and research organizations across Western Canada.
The pause will also allow organizers to review event length, timing and overall structure. While AgSmart has traditionally been held over three days in July, future formats may be shorter and potentially scheduled outside the busy midsummer period.
AgSmart launched in 2019, paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, and resumed in 2021. The event partnered with Agri-Trade in 2024.
