Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation Minister RJ Sigurdson has received a new mandate from Premier Danielle Smith — and at the heart of it is a clear directive to put “Alberta Agriculture First.”
The Premier’s early October mandate letter tasks Sigurdson with introducing new legislation to reduce red tape, strengthen the competitiveness of Alberta producers, and protect normal farming practices from increasing bureaucratic or municipal pressures.
“Alberta’s government is committed to putting Agriculture First – supporting growth, investment, and innovation across our ag and agri-processing sector,” Sigurdson commented via social media. “This mandate is about building opportunity and prosperity, while protecting the land and resources that make it all possible.”
Over the past year, Alberta attracted more than $3.8 billion in agri-processing investment, creating over 1,800 jobs for Albertans, he notes. The government also modernized legislation to give producers more flexibility in managing organic materials, laying the groundwork for further progress under the new mandate.
“Looking ahead, my focus is clear. We will bring forward Alberta Agriculture First legislation to cut red tape and strengthen competitiveness,” Sigurdson says.
The mandate highlights expanding markets both domestically and internationally, with a focus on Asia, the Middle East, Mexico and across Canada. Sigurdson also notes the government’s commitment to standing up for farmers and ranchers when federal policies raise costs or limit opportunities.
Other priorities include advancing irrigation modernization, supporting soil health and biodiversity, and strengthening local food systems to provide Albertans with more choice and security in their food supply.
