Stock talks strengthen relationships between producers and municipalities

An Alberta initiative bringing livestock producers and municipal leaders together is leading to stronger local relationships, say organizers.

Over the past year, the Intensive Livestock Working Group’s (ILWG) Stock Talks initiative has created opportunities for producers and municipal representatives to discuss the opportunities, challenges and realities of modern livestock production.

What began as a public trust project has grown into a broader producer-municipal engagement initiative focused on constructive conversations and informed local decision-making.

Stock Talks and related on-farm engagement events have been hosted in 16 municipalities, with 29 producers participating directly in meetings and tours.

The initiative has also generated more than 170 conversations with municipal leaders through the Alberta Municipalities Convention, Rural Municipalities of Alberta Conference and Provincial Agricultural Service Board Conference tradeshows.

Conversations lead to action

The results extend beyond the number of meetings held.

Producers involved in Stock Talks have since joined agricultural service boards, while municipal officials have requested additional meetings with producers. Municipalities have also approached ILWG for input on land-use planning, agricultural resolutions and rural road issues.

The initiative contributed to the development of the Rural Road Working Committee, which brings producers and municipalities together to discuss rural road challenges.

Participants have said the meetings provide a constructive setting for meaningful two-way discussions, helping municipal representatives better understand livestock production while giving producers more insight into municipal responsibilities and planning processes.

Monitoring municipal planning

Alongside its engagement activities, ILWG monitored municipal development plans, land-use bylaws and intermunicipal development plans in 48 Alberta municipalities.

The monthly monitoring helps keep producers informed about proposed planning decisions that could affect their operations and provides opportunities for agricultural perspectives to be considered earlier in the process.

Strong relationships between municipalities and livestock producers can support better-informed decisions for rural communities. The initiative aims to ensure producers are part of conversations that affect their operations and communities.

ILWG is now planning the next phase of the initiative.

Producers interested in hosting an on-farm tour, participating in a local discussion or helping share agriculture’s story can contact ILWG through its website.
