Spring is one of the busiest, and most stressful, times of year for Alberta producers and ranchers. Long hours, unpredictable conditions and mounting financial pressures can take a toll, and accessing mental health support isn’t always easy.
As these pressures continue across the sector, more people in agriculture are turning to AgTalk, an anonymous online community designed specifically for farmers, ranchers and others working in the industry.
AgTalk is a specialty agriculture-focused space within Togetherall, offering 24/7 access to peer support in a clinically moderated environment. The platform is supported in Canada by the Do More Agriculture Foundation.
Access to mental health services remains a challenge in many rural and agricultural communities, where distance, availability and stigma can all be barriers.
Data from AgTalk highlights the extent of that gap. Since launching in 2023, the platform has seen more than 10,000 interactions. More than 60 per cent of users report they are not receiving any formal mental health support, while one third say they do not access any support outside of AgTalk.
The most common discussions on the platform include topics like stress, depression, anxiety, loneliness and relationship challenges.
AgTalk is designed to provide a safe, anonymous space where individuals can connect with others who understand the realities of agriculture. Users can share experiences, ask questions or simply read and engage with others facing similar situations.
The platform is monitored around the clock by trained clinicians, helping ensure conversations remain safe and supportive. A trained peer program has also been introduced to strengthen engagement within the community.
For many in agriculture, the ability to access support anonymously and on their own time is a key factor in using the platform.
AgTalk is available to individuals aged 16 and older and can be accessed online at any time. Organizers emphasize that users do not need to be in crisis to benefit from the platform, and that early connection can play an important role in maintaining mental well-being.
