Celebrating Alberta’s Local Food Week

Alberta’s Local Food Week is set to take place from August 14-20, highlighting the contributions of local farmers, ranchers, and food processors.

In a statement released on August 12, 2024, Minister of Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, RJ Sigurdson, emphasized the importance of supporting local food producers during this week.

“Alberta is known around the world for producing premium-quality, great-tasting food with the highest standards of food safety, animal care, biosecurity and environmental stewardship,” explained Minister Sigurdson. “Whether it’s fresh produce, craft beer and cider, or our world-renowned Alberta beef, Alberta’s agriculture producers provide our province, country and world with nutritious food every single day.”

Some of the key highlights include:

  • Food Day Canada kicked off celebrations on August 5th, encouraging Canadians to buy from local growers, producers, distillers, and brewers.
  • The Made in Alberta voluntary labelling program, launched in March, helps shoppers easily identify locally produced food and beverages. Over 225 products are labelled, with more on the way.
  • Open Farm Days on August 19 and 20 will allow Albertans to visit farms and meet the people behind their food, providing a firsthand look at food production.

Minister Sigurdson invites everyone to participate in these events to learn more about Alberta’s food production, and enjoy locally made products.
