Canada’s Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Beef Cattle is currently undergoing an update, with a public comment period expected to begin April 13, 2026.
The Code sets out basic standards for animal care practices for producers. It was originally released in 2013 and reviewed in 2018. An update process began in 2023 through the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC), which oversees Code development in collaboration with industry and other stakeholders.
During the 60-day public comment period, producers and other stakeholders will have the opportunity to review the draft Code and provide feedback before it is finalized.
Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) will be reviewing the draft Code when it is released as part of the public comment period.
According to NFACC, participation in the public comment period is a key opportunity for Canada’s cattle producers to help shape standards that are workable, science-based and reflective of on-farm realities.
