Canfax Weekly Article | Report for the week of December 13, 2021

Last week the Canfax fed steer and heifer prices closed around $163.75/cwt, $1.25/cwt higher than the previous week. Alberta fed prices are $27/cwt higher than last year and $15/cwt higher than the five-year average. Last week dressed sales were reported from $273.50-275.50/cwt FOB lot. Most of the cattle that traded were being scheduled for late December/early January delivery. Alberta fed basis levels did strengthen last week but remain weaker than the five-year average.

The Canfax average feeder steer price closed the week $1.50/cwt higher while heifer prices traded mostly steady. Light weight steer calves traded $1-5/cwt lower last week and continue to hover very close to annual lows. Steers over 700lb traded $2-5/cwt stronger. Heifers weighing from 5-800lb traded steady to $1.50/cwt lower. Western Canadian calf and feeder indices closed the week at $201.77/cwt and $189.52/cwt respectively. Alberta weekly auction volumes totaled just over 35,000 head last week. Canadian feeder cattle exports to the US for the week ending November 27th totaled 3,742 head.

Alberta D2 cows traded $4.50/cwt higher last week and live trade was reported from $63-78/cwt. D3 cows averaged $62.50/cwt. Butcher bulls traded $1.50/cwt higher to average $98.50/cwt and live trade was reported from $82-115/cwt. Canadian butcher bull exports to the U.S. for the week ending November 27th totaled 414 head.

  • Employees at Cargill accepted the company’s offer to avoid a strike.
  • In eight out of the past 10 years Alberta fed prices have strengthened from the start of December to the end of December.
  • U.S. beef exports for the month of October were 9% larger than last year.

Bear.

  • Since August U.S. pork cutout values have dropped over 30%.
  • U.S. steer carcass weights are the largest they have been all year.
  • Since mid-November U.S. Choice and Select round primal values have dropped $34-37/cwt.
