SCAP Water Program updates recognize regional variation

The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP) has undergone some significant changes in its water program.

The Sustainable CAP Water Program supports primary producers in securing, protecting, and managing sustainable water sources. Whether through new or expanded dugouts, farmers can enhance water security at the farm level.

Changes to the grant were brought forward from stakeholder input, including insights from Alberta Beef Producers (ABP). This led to the implementation of sliding scales. These scales account for variations in well depth and associated costs. Now, farmers and ranchers can access funding that aligns with their specific circumstances.

Recognizing that water-related challenges vary across regions, the program now allocates $2.5 billion to support tailored agriculture programs and services. These initiatives are designed to meet the unique needs of different areas, ensuring equitable access to funding.

Currently, an applicant may apply to both of the program streams, including the On-Farm Irrigation Stream, and the On-Farm Watery Supply Stream.

According to the Government of Alberta, for dugouts, dams, and spring development, under the On-Farm Water Supply Stream, applicants must speak to an Agriculture and Irrigation Water specialist and receive an approved Construction Sheet prior to planning an construction.

About the Author

Kara grew up on a grain farm near Bow Island, Alberta. After attending SAIT and the University of Calgary — where she obtained a degree in communication and media studies, and a diploma in broadcast news — Kara began her professional career working in agricultural communications and agricultural journalism. Kara now resides near her family’s farm, raising a mix of livestock, consisting mostly of goats (because something has to eat all that kochia). Kara has a passion for storytelling, but even more so, asking the questions that matter. You can find her surrounded by farmers/ranchers and a cup of coffee — or at an upcoming ABP event!
