National Invasive Species Action Week: Protecting our landscapes and communities

In a concerted effort to safeguard natural ecosystems, the Canadian Council on Invasive Species (CCIS) is hosting National Invasive Species Action Week (NISAW).

This annual event, running May 12-18 this year, aims to raise awareness and promote action against invasive species across Canada.

Invasive species pose a significant threat to our environment, agriculture, and communities. These non-native plants, animals, and pathogens can outcompete native species, disrupt ecosystems, and hard agricultural productivity.

Whether you are a producer, gardener, or outdoor enthusiast, there are several ways to get involved:

• Spread the word: Use social media platforms to share information about invasive species. Remember to use the hashtag #NISAW to join the conversation.
• Learn and educate: Attend webinars hosted by CCIS during NISAW. These sessions cover topics related to invasive species management, prevention, and awareness.
• Take specific steps: During NISAW, focus on practical actions that prevent the spread of invasive species:
  • Inspect and clean: Before heading outdoors, check your gear, vehicles, and clothing for hitchhiking invasive species
  • Plant natives: Choose native plants for your garden to support local biodiversity
  • Report sightings: If you spot an invasive species, report it to local authorities or use citizen science apps.
